I actually had the pleasure of hearing Nastasha Trethewey read selections form Bellocq's Ophelia in New Orleans. After reading the work and then hearing the author bring the words to life, it was an experience I will never forget. She was amazing. Poetry is fantastic, and Trethewey's approach was fantastic. With Bellocq's Ophelia Trethewey brought life to the character creating words into a film of the mind.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man ~ James Joyce

I recently  picked  up Ulysses and felt like I probably should read  A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man before fully jumping into Ulysses. My experience with Joyce before this novel was his short story “The Dead” from his collection The Dubliners. I remember absolutely enjoying “The Dead,” but like most readers, who approach Ulysses for the first time,I felt a little overwhelmed. I am a big fan of stream-of-conscious narration. Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner are two of my favorite Modernist writers. Further, as a fan of serious literature, I need to conquer Joyce at somepoint (and prepare for my intense Faulkner course next semester).  So now, onto this fine piece of literary experimentation. Pg.12-13 1.2: Why write it up? to share our work and ti improve it before we do. 1.2.1 Write to Remember -First write to remember what we read. a few talented people can hold a mass of info in their heads. -When you don't take notes on what you read you're likely to forget or worse, misremember it. 1.2.2 Write to Understand -A second reason for writing is to understand or see larger patterns in what you read. -Careful researchers never put off writing until theyve gathered all teh data they need: they write from the beginning of their project to help assemble their information in new ways.
